For busy moms, mornings often resemble a whirlwind of activity—getting kids dressed, packing lunches, and preparing for the day's demands. In such chaos, personal well-being can take a backseat. However, establishing a healthy morning routine can set a positive tone for the entire day. With a few practical strategies, busy moms can discover how to start their mornings right.
The Importance of a Morning Routine
A structured morning routine can significantly enhance both mental and physical health. Research indicates that 70% of successful people credit their morning routine as a key factor to their achievements. Having a predictable start to the day not only creates stability for children but also helps moms feel more in control. By dedicating time to well-being activities, busy moms can increase energy levels, boost productivity, and nurture emotional resilience. I have been playing around with my morning routine for years and it looks different now than it did pre-kid, however, the important thing is to make sure I am carving out a little time for my needs first thing in the morning.
Starting with the Right Mindset
Cultivating a healthy morning starts with a positive mindset. Consider beginning each day with gratitude or intention-setting. This might be as simple as reflecting for a moment on three things you are thankful for or visualizing how you want your day to unfold.
These mental shifts can make a significant impact. For example, keeping a gratitude journal by your bedside allows you to jot down a few thoughts as part of your morning ritual, reinforcing positivity and readiness for the day. You don't need to write anything down for this habit either, it could be as simple and thinking about your days positive intention. As soon as I wake up, I shift my mind to gratitude and think about how lucky I am for everything we have and that I woke up today!
Hydration is Key
After a full night’s sleep, the body needs rehydration. Start your morning by drinking a glass of water to help combat dehydration. Enhancing your water with lemon or lime and a pinch of salt can provide additional health benefits and allow your body to absorb the water.
Staying hydrated can boost concentration and energy levels. Studies show that just a 2% decrease in hydration can significantly impair cognitive function. Thus, maintaining proper hydration is essential for busy moms juggling multiple tasks. I like to fill my glass of water the night before so it's ready to grab and drink as soon as I am up. You could set it on your bedside table to have it ready on the kitchen counter for when you head downstairs or have a water bottle with lime and salt in the fridge to grab and go. Try to make it easy to add to your morning routine by preparing it the night before.
Nourish Your Body
A nutritious breakfast gives the body the fuel it needs for a busy day. Rather than opting for sugary cereals or pastries, choose whole foods that are rich in protein and fibre. Examples include: 3 Egg muffins (turkey bacon, mushrooms, peppers and cheese), overnight oatmeal and chia seeds topped with blueberries, nuts and Greek Yogurt, a protein shake packed with greens, or cottage cheese with hemp hearts, coconut flakes and strawberries.
Meal prepping breakfast on weekends can save time during the week. This habit ensures that moms can enjoy a healthy meal even on the most hectic mornings. Planning ahead is key to success here.
Incorporate Movement
Morning physical activity doesn’t need to be elaborate or time-consuming. Incorporating movement can be as simple as a 10-minute yoga session, a brisk walk around the block, or even dancing to your favourite tunes with your kids.
This not only elevates your heart rate but also stimulates the release of endorphins, which improve mood and relieve stress. A short morning workout can make exercise feel more achievable, helping busy moms find a balance in their schedules. My morning minimum for activity is light stretches and a short walk outside.
Mindfulness and Meditation
Taking time for mindfulness or meditation can drastically change the morning. Even just 5-10 minutes of deep breathing or using guided meditation can clear the mind and generate a sense of calm before a hectic day begins.
Numerous apps offer free guided meditation sessions, making it convenient to integrate this practice into daily life. Setting aside this time can be a game-changer in managing stress and increasing focus.
Establish a Family Routine
Involving the family in morning routines fosters a shared sense of responsibility. Assign tasks to each family member, from choosing outfits to preparing breakfast.
This approach not only alleviates stress for busy moms but also teaches kids important life skills. Creating a visual schedule can be especially helpful for younger children, allowing them to understand their roles in the morning process.
Time Management Tools
Effective time management is crucial for smooth mornings. Leverage tools such as timers or planners to allocate specific time slots for different activities.
For example, set a timer for 10 minutes for getting everyone dressed, followed by 15 minutes for breakfast. These focused bursts of time encourage the entire family to stick to the schedule and remain on track.
Embrace Flexibility
Despite meticulous planning, flexibility remains essential. Life with kids can be unpredictable, so it is critical to establish a routine that allows for adjustments when needed.
If certain mornings unfold differently than expected, avoid self-judgment. Embrace those unexpected moments, and remember that even small adaptations can contribute positively to your day.
A Healthier Start Begins Now
Creating a healthy morning routine for busy moms doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. By prioritizing hydration, nourishment, and mindfulness, mothers can enhance their well-being and cultivate a positive environment for their families.
Implement these strategies gradually, tailoring them to your family's unique needs. The aim is to create a fulfilling routine that brings joy, so you can start each day energized and ready to tackle any challenges ahead. Investing in your health benefits not only you but every family member as well.
Here is an example of my morning routine: 6am: Wake up, deep breathing and gratitude while in bed
6:05am: Drink a glass of water, brush hair and teeth
6:15am: Light stretches by my bed, then get dressed and ready for the day
6:20am: Head downstairs and prep breakfast, more water and coffee
6:30am: Grab my son once he wakes up, get him dressed and fed
6:45am: Go outside for daylight and drive him to daycare
7:05am: Can check phone for emails or updates after drop off
7:30am: Back home to eat my breakfast, quick walk and prepare for clients. Your morning can look very different than mine, but making sure you try to incorporate some of the key tips above and in the time frame you have is great. I highly suggest trying to wake up before your kids so you have a set amount of time for you and your needs.
