As a busy mom, you may feel like finding time to exercise is impossible. Between work, family, and other commitments, it's easy to sideline your fitness goals. However, it doesn't have to be that way. With a few simple strategies, you can kickstart your exercise routine and prioritize your health without sacrificing precious moments with your family.
In this post, we will dive into effective tips and actionable strategies that busy moms can adopt to make exercise a regular part of their lives. Whether you're just beginning or getting back into a routine, these suggestions will help you find the motivation and time to get moving. I have been there and these simple techniques really do work!
Set Realistic Goals
The first step in starting an exercise routine is setting realistic and achievable goals. Rather than aiming for an hour at the gym every day, consider beginning with just 5 to 15 minutes of activity.
For example, you might aim to walk for 10 minutes during your lunch break, or add 10 squats while you make dinner, adding little movements when you have time is better than nothing all day! I have created a 5 min Movement Routine for Busy Moms to help get you started. Grab it here. Smaller, attainable goals can boost your confidence and provide a sense of accomplishment as you progress.

Find Activities You Enjoy
Exercise should not feel like a chore. Finding activities you genuinely enjoy can significantly enhance your motivation to stay active.
Try different forms of exercise to discover what fits best for you. Here are a few fun options:
Dancing: Join a dance class or follow dance youtube videos. You could even have spontaneous dance parties with your kids!
Yoga: Not only does it improve flexibility, but it can also calm your mind.
Biking: You could enjoy this indoor or outdoor based on the season.
Strength Training: My favourite style of workout!
When you enjoy what you're doing, you’re more likely to continue. Plus, working out with your kids can make it even more engaging. For instance, enjoy a family bike ride or play a game of soccer in the park.
Schedule Your Workouts
Treating your workouts as essential appointments can be a game-changer. Schedule your exercise sessions in your calendar, just like you would for a doctor's appointment or a business meeting.
Finding the best time for you is crucial. For example, some moms prefer early morning workouts before the kids wake up, while others may find mid-day sessions during nap time more suitable. Dedicating specific times in your day for exercise makes it easier to commit and prioritize your fitness.
Incorporate Movement into Daily Life
You can find ways to stay active that don't require extra time carved out for workouts.
Implement simple changes like:
Taking the stairs instead of the elevator: This can burn about 5 calories per flight.
Parking further away from the store entrance: A quick walk can add up to an extra 200 steps.
Squats while brushing your teeth or cooking: Add a few squats while you do another task.
You can also combine household chores with movement. Dance while you clean or do lunges while you vacuum. These little adjustments throughout your day can accumulate and keep you active.
Involve Your Kids
Exercising with your kids can be a fantastic way to bond while staying active together. Look for family-friendly activities that everyone can enjoy.
Consider going for nature walks, playing tag in your backyard, or even participating in community walks or fun runs together. Not only will you stay fit, but you’ll also be teaching your children the importance of an active lifestyle. We enjoy walks around our property multiple times a day (after meals) and encourage climbing or extra play as we explore the trails.
Create a Support System
Having a support system can significantly boost your fitness journey. Connecting with other moms who share similar goals can provide motivation.
Consider joining local fitness groups, participating in online forums like my Fitness App or Private Facebook Group, or starting a workout buddy system with a friend. Sharing goals and progress creates accountability and encouragement when challenges arise.
Prioritize Self-Care
As a busy mom, it is often easy to neglect your own needs. However, prioritizing self-care is vital for your physical and mental health.
Set aside time to focus on yourself, whether through a quick workout, reading a book, or enjoying a warm bath. Taking care of yourself allows you to recharge, giving you more energy to be present for your family. I suggest writing out a big list of everything you enjoy doing and keep it close by for ideas you can try each day. I have created a self-care checklist for my clients to use, check it out below. Celebrate Your Progress
Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small, as you embark on your fitness journey. Celebrating achievements helps maintain motivation and commitment.
Consider keeping a journal to track your workouts, note how you feel, and recognize any milestones. This practice can serve as a powerful reminder of how far you’ve come and keep you inspired to continue.
Embrace the Exercise Journey
Starting an exercise routine as a busy mom might seem overwhelming, but it can be manageable and enjoyable. By setting realistic goals, discovering activities you love, and incorporating movement into your daily life, you can prioritize your health without sacrificing family time.
Keep in mind, every bit of movement counts, and it's never too late to start. Enjoy the journey, acknowledge your growth, and most importantly, have fun along the way. And as always, I am here to help! Contact me with any questions: kbhealthcoach1@gmail.com
