Creating a supportive and effective health professional team is essential for women striving to achieve their health and wellness goals. With the right mix of expertise, encouragement, and understanding, women can navigate their unique health journeys with confidence. This blog post will guide you through the process of assembling a team that caters specifically to women's health needs, ensuring that every aspect of wellness is addressed. I will also give examples of how I build my health team (yes, coaches need a team too) and who I recommend for local professionals in the Elora, Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo area.
Understanding Women's Health Needs
Women’s health encompasses a wide range of issues, from reproductive health to mental wellness. Understanding these unique needs is the first step in building a health professional team. Women often face specific challenges, such as hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, menopause, and mental health concerns, which require specialized knowledge and care.
A well-rounded team should include professionals who are not only knowledgeable but also empathetic to the unique experiences women face. This understanding fosters a supportive environment where women feel comfortable discussing their health concerns. If you don't feel a good connection with any of your current health professionals, you have the right to find a new one!
Key Health Professionals to Consider
1. Primary Care Physician
A primary care physician (PCP) or general doctor is the cornerstone of any health team. They provide comprehensive care, manage chronic conditions, and refer patients to specialists when necessary. Look for a PCP who has experience in women’s health and understands the specific health issues women face. You can switch doctors at any point, so don't feel trapped with your current one if you feel they don't listen to you or you want a better relationship. Do some research and find someone you can trust!
2. Gynecologist
A gynecologist specializes in female reproductive health. Regular check-ups, screenings, and preventive care are crucial for maintaining reproductive health. Choose a gynecologist who makes you feel comfortable and is open to discussing all aspects of your health. This field has more women in it that 10 years ago, so if a male makes you feel uncomfortable in this role, keep looking. I found my gynecologist only a few years ago after my first miscarriage.
3. Nutrition Coach or Dietitian
Nutrition plays a vital role in overall health and wellness. A nutritionist or dietitian can help women develop personalized meal plans that cater to their specific health goals, whether it’s weight management, hormonal balance, or managing chronic conditions. Yes, I coach in this area for my clients, but years ago when I was on a difficult journey with hormones, miscarriages and food sensitivities, I reached out to a few different coaches who specialized in women's hormones.
4. Mental Health Professional
Mental health is just as important as physical health. A psychologist or therapist can provide support for issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress management. Look for a mental health professional who specializes in women’s issues and can offer a safe space for discussion.
Who I recommend:
Gabbie is a great option for in person counselling in Waterloo or virtual.
Lisa is a psychotherapist and nutritionist in Guelph. If you don't feel you need full sessions in this area, at least focusing on mindset and positive thinking with a coach can be very beneficial. I love to help my clients re-frame their current mindset to allow for growth throughout their health, fitness and wellness journey.
5. Fitness Trainer
Physical activity is essential for maintaining health and wellness. A fitness trainer who understands women’s fitness needs can create tailored workout plans that consider any physical limitations or specific goals. Look for trainers who have experience working with women and can provide motivation and support. I personally took PCES program to learn more about working with pregnant and postpartum women as well as constantly learning new things around women's hormones and how they impact our workouts, nutrition, sleep and more!

6. Alternative Health Practitioners
Consider including alternative health practitioners, such as Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, or Somatic Coaches in your team. These professionals can offer complementary therapies that enhance overall wellness and address specific health concerns. I love to lean on these professionals when I feel my body needs it (sometimes monthly), here are a few of my local recommendations:
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist: Kathleen in Kitchener.
Chiropractor: Dr. Justine, in Guelph.
Somatic Coach/Breath-work: Kristine in Cambridge or virtually.
Building Communication Among Your Team
Effective communication is key to a successful health professional team. Ensure that all members of your team are aware of your health goals and any treatments you are undergoing. This collaboration allows for a more integrated approach to your health and ensures that everyone is on the same page.
Encourage your health professionals to communicate with each other, sharing insights and updates about your progress. This teamwork can lead to more effective treatment plans and better outcomes.
Find health professionals with multiple qualifications to help lower the amount of people you need to go see, but still get the right support and information for your set goals. For example, I am certified as a: Personal Trainer- CSEP Nutrition Coach- PN2 Sleep, Stress and Recovery Coach- PN Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Coach Mental Skills Coach- Master's of Sport Psychology Titleist Performance Institute Strength and Power Coach -TPI S2 (golf fitness)
Kettlebell Instructor- Agatsu Fitness
Plus many other smaller courses for yearly education. I may not use all my qualifications with each client, but I can provide a well rounded approach to help them achieve their goals in the areas I do provide. Then clients often supplement my services with a massage therapist, chiropractor, or service I cannot personal provide. Setting Clear Health Goals
Before assembling your team, take some time to reflect on your health and wellness goals. Are you looking to improve your fitness, manage a chronic condition, or enhance your mental well-being? Having clear goals will help you choose the right professionals for your team.
Once you have established your goals, communicate them to your health professionals. This clarity will guide their recommendations and ensure that everyone is working towards the same objectives.
Regular Check-Ins and Adjustments
Health and wellness are dynamic processes that require regular check-ins and adjustments. Schedule periodic meetings with your health team to discuss your progress, reassess your goals, and make any necessary changes to your treatment plans.
These check-ins provide an opportunity to celebrate your successes and address any challenges you may be facing. Keeping an open line of communication with your team will help you stay motivated and accountable. The timeline can be different for each professional, so see what works for you and your goals.
Empowering Yourself Through Education
Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to health and wellness. Take the time to educate yourself about women’s health issues, nutrition, fitness, and mental well-being. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions and advocate for your health.
Consider attending workshops, reading books, or following reputable health blogs and podcasts. The more you know, the better equipped you will be to engage with your health professionals and make choices that align with your wellness goals.
Here are some podcasts I love for health and wellness:
The Wellness Mama Podcast
The Resetter Podcast
The Model Health Show
Wellness Uncomplicated
The School of Greatness
