Understanding the Reasons Behind Eating Habits: Three Reasons Why We Eat and Their Impact

Eating is something we all do every day, but have you ever stopped to think about why we eat? It’s not just about filling our stomachs. There are deeper reasons behind our eating habits that affect our health, mood, and overall well-being. As someone who’s passionate about helping moms over 30 reclaim their health and energy, I want to share some insights that might just change the way you think about food.

Let’s dive into the three main reasons why we eat and explore how understanding these can help you make better choices for your body and mind.

The Reasons Behind Eating Habits: More Than Just Hunger

When I first started paying attention to my own eating habits many years ago, I realized that hunger wasn’t the only reason I reached for food. Sometimes, it was boredom, stress, or even just the sight of something delicious. These reasons behind eating habits are common, and recognizing them is the first step toward healthier eating.

  1. Physical Hunger - This is the most obvious reason. Your body needs fuel to function, and when your stomach growls, it’s a clear sign you need to eat. Physical hunger builds gradually and can be satisfied with almost any food. However, it is important to fuel with good quality foods that include lean protein, healthy fats and complex carbs, more on this later.

  2. Emotional Hunger - This one sneaks up on many of us. Emotional hunger is triggered by feelings like stress, sadness, or even happiness. It often leads to cravings for comfort foods, which might not always be the healthiest choices. Have you ever had a bad day and come home and start reaching for foods, then all of a sudden you ate a whole bag of chips or a full box of chocolates? That can be one sign of emotional eating.

  3. Social or Environmental Cues - Ever noticed how you want to eat just because everyone else is eating? Or because there’s a delicious smell in the air? These cues can prompt eating even when you’re not physically hungry. This can be even more of an issue if you are chronically fuelled because if you were full and satisfied after a balanced meal, it's much easier to say no to more food, either it's dessert or popcorn at the movies.

Understanding these reasons behind eating habits helps us become more mindful. Instead of eating on autopilot, we can pause and ask ourselves, “Am I really hungry, or is something else driving me to eat?”

How These Reasons Impact Our Health and Well-being

Knowing why we eat is powerful because it influences how we approach food and nutrition. For moms over 30, especially those recovering postpartum or returning to exercise, this awareness can be a game-changer.

  • Physical Hunger and Nutrition

When you eat because of true physical hunger, your body gets the nutrients it needs to recover, build strength, and maintain energy. This is crucial during postpartum recovery when your body is healing and needs extra care. Make sure check out my other blog with a 2 Day Meal Plan for Moms.

  • Emotional Eating and Its Challenges

Emotional eating can sometimes lead to overeating or choosing foods that don’t support your health goals. It’s okay to enjoy comfort foods occasionally, but if emotional eating becomes a habit, it might slow down your progress or affect your mood. I like to follow the 80/20 rule and enjoy foods outside of my healthy guidelines less than 20% of the time. So in my week that might mean eating out once on the weekend, having a glass of wine and enjoying a dessert.

  • Social Eating and Mindful Choices

Social situations often involve food, and it’s easy to get caught up in eating just because others are. Being mindful in these moments helps you enjoy the experience without overdoing it. I will enjoy a drink or dessert at someones house but wouldn't have that if I were at home. It's about finding a balance that makes sense for you and your goals.

By recognizing these impacts, you can start making choices that support your health journey, whether it’s choosing nutrient-dense meals or finding other ways to cope with emotions. Learning new techniques for coping is important and could be: journalling, chatting with a friend, speaking with a professional, setting aside time for your joy and needs etc.

What are 10 Reasons for Eating Healthy?

Eating healthy isn’t just about restriction or dieting, in fact I hate the word diet! It’s about nourishing your body, fuelling it so you can hit your goals and helping your brain health so you can feel your best every day. Here are ten reasons why choosing healthy foods matters, especially for moms balancing so much:

  1. Boosts Energy Levels - Healthy foods provide steady energy, helping you keep up with your busy day and avoiding crashes.

  2. Supports Postpartum Recovery - Nutrient-rich foods aid healing and replenish your body.

  3. Improves Mood - Certain nutrients can help regulate mood and reduce stress.

  4. Enhances Sleep Quality - Eating well can promote better sleep, which is vital for recovery and energy.

  5. Strengthens Immunity - A balanced diet helps your body fight off illness, I hardly get sick, even with my son in daycare and being exposed to many bugs!

  6. Promotes Healthy Weight Management - Eating nutritious foods supports a healthy metabolism.

  7. Supports Brain Health - Nutrients like omega-3s improve focus and mental clarity.

  8. Reduces Risk of Chronic Diseases - Healthy eating lowers the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic diseases.

  9. Improves Digestion - Fiber-rich foods keep your digestive system running smoothly.

10. Encourages Positive Relationship with Food - Healthy eating fosters mindful habits and self-care.

These reasons highlight why making thoughtful food choices is a powerful act of self-love and care.

Practical Tips to Align Your Eating with Your True Needs

Now that we’ve explored why we eat and the impact of those reasons, let’s talk about how you can put this knowledge into practice. Here are some simple, actionable tips to help you eat more mindfully and support your health goals:

  • Listen to Your Body

Before eating, check in with yourself. Are you physically hungry, or is it emotional or social hunger? This pause can prevent unnecessary snacking. Often times people are actually thirsty, so you could try having a glass of water and then reassess how you feel. If you really are hungry, eat a healthy balanced meal or snack.

  • Plan Balanced Meals

Include a mix of protein, healthy fats, and fiber-rich carbs to keep you full and energized longer. Grab my free resource on Protein Based Meals here.

  • Create a Supportive Environment

Keep healthy snacks accessible and limit tempting junk food at home. If you have certain foods at home you want to limit, keep them in an inconvenient place, such as in the basement vs. kitchen.

  • Find Alternatives to Emotional Eating

When stress hits, try a walk, journaling, or deep breathing instead of reaching for food. And if you truly want chocolate, aim for 70% dark chocolate or higher.

  • Enjoy Food Socially, Mindfully

Savour your meals and enjoy the company without feeling pressured to overeat. Pick a meal you want to truly enjoy and don't have any guilt around it. Remember the 80/20 rule!

  • Stay Hydrated

Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger. Drinking water regularly can help manage cravings. On average most people need to aim for around 2L of water a day. However, if you drink caffeine or alcohol you will need to add more as both of those dehydrate you.

By incorporating these habits, you’ll find it easier to nourish your body in a way that feels good and supports your lifestyle.
