Motherhood is a rewarding journey filled with joy and challenges. As a mother, it sometimes seems impossible to find time for personal pursuits, particularly fitness. However, staying active is essential not just for your health but for your family's well-being. By prioritizing fitness, you set a shining example for your children about living a healthy life. In this article, I will share practical tips to help you balance motherhood and fitness effectively, enabling a healthier lifestyle for both you and your loved ones.
Understanding the Importance of Fitness in Motherhood
Fitness goes beyond looking good; it’s all about feeling great and managing the daily demands of motherhood. Regular physical activity can boost energy levels by as much as 25%, enhance mood through the release of endorphins, and improve overall health. For instance, research shows that mothers who engage in regular exercise are less likely to experience symptoms of postpartum depression. Furthermore, your dedication to staying active instills values of health and fitness in your children.
Finding time for fitness can be difficult, but it remains vital. When you prioritize your well-being, you create a stronger foundation for your family.
Set Realistic Goals
The first step in balancing motherhood and fitness is setting achievable goals. Understand that your body has undergone significant changes and be patient with yourself. Instead of aiming for rapid transformations, focus on small, practical goals that fit seamlessly into your life.
For example, aim to exercise for 20-30 minutes a day, three to four times per week. This can include brisk walking, a short home workout, or even a calming yoga session. If you track your progress, you might see that you can gradually extend your exercise duration or intensity. Celebrate every small milestone because they accumulate into significant improvements. 6 weeks after having my son I had the following weekly routine:
10 min of foam rolling and light stretches- most days
15 min walk in our trails- most days
20-40min full body workouts- 2-3 days a week
Biking or hockey (cardio based) 1-2 days a week
You can find what works best for you and your goals, but adding movement in ways you enjoy will give you the best chance at getting it done!
Create a Flexible Schedule
Flexibility is critical when juggling motherhood and fitness. Life with children is unpredictable, making it essential to have a fitness schedule that adapts to your lifestyle.
Consider working out during your children's nap times or while they engage in independent play. If you cannot find a solid block of time, break your workouts into shorter sessions. Even just five minutes of activity can improve your mood and energy levels, whether through short stretches, a quick dance break, or a fast-paced walk. When my son was young I would try to complete my strength workouts while he slept or have him in a jumper and watching me workout. As he got older and started to go to daycare, I would schedule my workout times around my clients, which can change daily, so being flexible is key. As long as I got some movement each day, I was happy.
Involve Your Children
Making fitness a family affair can be an enjoyable way to bond while staying active. Involve your children in your workouts: consider biking together, hiking local trails, or playing active games at the park. Or if they are small enough, wear or hold them while you do certain exercises. I have a free document on safe ways to workout with your baby, you can grab that here.

You can also turn hallway chores into creative exercises. Try dancing while cleaning or doing squats when playing with your kids. Activities like these not only keep you moving but also teach your children the importance of staying active without it feeling like hard work. Often times I will do calf raises off the stairs as he climbs them slowly, add walking lunges as he explores outside and hold a plank while we play toys on the ground together. There are so many ways to add exercise bites to your day, see what you come up with and let me know.
Prioritize Self-Care
As a mother, it can be too easy to neglect your needs. However, prioritizing self-care is crucial for maintaining both your physical and mental health. Set aside time for yourself—whether it’s for exercise, a soothing bath, or simply relaxing with a good book.
Taking care of yourself is not a selfish act; it is a necessary one. When you feel good, you become more present and engaged in your family's life. This commitment to self-care can transform how you approach motherhood and fitness. Trust me, your husband/partner will be glad you worked out and made time for yourself when you come back in a WAY better mood!
Find a Support System
A support system can be a game-changer in your fitness journey. Connect with other mothers who understand the challenges you face.
You might consider joining a local fitness group or participating in a community class. Surrounding yourself with supportive friends can help keep you motivated. This community can offer encouragement, share tips, or even be workout partners. I have a private Facebook Group for all my mom clients to connect and get bonus weekly tips, so if you are interested in working together, that's a great freebie that can support your health and fitness journey.
Nutrition Matters
Fitness extends beyond exercise; nutrition is also critical for health. Aim to incorporate healthy, balanced meals into your family’s weekly meal plan. That means high lean protein (30g), healthy fats, vegetables and complex carbs at each meal. Grab a free handout on balanced meals here.
Planning meals weekly can save time and ensure you maintain a whole food approach. Include your children in cooking, teaching them about nutrition while creating fun, engaging meals. Statistics show that children who help prepare meals are more likely to try new foods and develop healthier eating habits. I always have my son around me in the kitchen and he helps cut up veggies with his kid friendly knife and enjoys putting food into a bowl so I can place it in the frying pan. When we make muffins or pancakes, he likes to help put the ingredients in the bowl and stir it up. They learn so many great skills from cooking with parents!
Stay Positive and Patient
Balancing motherhood and fitness is a journey that requires positivity and patience. There will be tough days when things may not go as planned, and that’s completely okay.
Acknowledge your efforts and remember that every small step counts. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how seemingly minor. Your progress adds up over time, so keep a positive mindset and embrace the journey.
Embracing Your Unique Path
While balancing fitness and motherhood is undoubtedly challenging, it is entirely achievable with the right attitude and strategies. By setting realistic goals, maintaining flexibility, and involving your children, you can successfully weave fitness into your family life.
Remember, nurturing yourself is essential for your well-being and your family's happiness. Embrace your path, stay motivated, and enjoy the numerous benefits of leading a healthier lifestyle.
