3 Reasons Why We Eat

Updated: Jul 30, 2024

Have you ever thought about why we eat? For many people it might not come to mind, but these are the real reasons you eat.

  1. Homeostatic: Our body needs a certain amount of energy to survive and complete daily tasks. If you add exercise you would need more food. This is the basic and most important reason why we eat food.

  2. Hedonic: Eating based on our emotions, pleasure or for self-medicating. This way of eating can lead people to massive weight gain as it can be hard to control. Think about a time you mindlessly ate a whole bag of chips or were emotional and ate a whole box of chocolates. Being aware of this type of eating can make a huge change on your weight loss journey.

  3. Habits: Sometimes people eat because the food is in front of them or in the house. Thinking about those treats in the cupboard until you breakdown and go get them. Or if you always eat at noon you continue to do that even if you aren't hungry. Habits can be helpful or hurtful depending on how you have been using them. Working on switching habits to healthy and helpful will increase your chances of reaching your goals and staying there!

If you struggle with eating, gaining fat and not reaching your goals then nutrition coaching can be a great option for you!
